A COLLABORATIVE TEXTILE ZINE

AN EXPLORATION OF RIVER MASS

HOW CAN THE WATERS SURFACE AND ITS PATTERNS BE TRANSLATED TO TEXTILE

Everything started out with materiality, a concept rather foreign to a group of illustration, fine arts and graphic design students. Unintentionally we had all taken almost the exact same photograph on the very first day of this practice; the shining reflections of the patterns on the water.

Unintentionally, our photos created a new pattern together. Something that we did not expect turned out to work really well together.

This is what we see in the patterns of the river too. All the layers, the differences in depth, the light on the surface, together form the patterns we see. These factors are completely arbitrary, and this is where our concept was created from.

How can we capture the arbitrary patterns in the river into textile techniques? How can we make something so organically created with techniques that are very strict and stiff?

We created unintended patterns and embraced intended chaos
